Getting a good internship during MBA

MBA Internships

MBA students start their internships in summer, after the first year of business school. It is critical that students get the right kind of internship at the right place. How is that possible? It is indeed possible. The internship is very important in shaping a student's career path. Strategizing now about what kind of internship you will want is just one more way of preparing yourself for success in your MBA program and your post-MBA career. As far as possible an internship should be done in the same field as your MBA major as it helps get the required training and knowledge needed for a full time job in your chosen MBA major.

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) recently surveyed 690 companies worldwide who hire MBAs. Of the companies that hire MBA interns (62% of those surveyed), roughly three-quarters (74%) said that when they seek to hire new employees, they first interview people who have done MBA internships with them, and then open the field to other candidates. All companies stated that more than half its new MBA hires would come from the internship pool. Thus in more than 50% of the cases, an internship leads to a full time position in the same company after you graduate with a MBA degree. A critical part of an internship is to foster strong bonds with mentor, learn about organizational culture, obtain on job training and develop strong skills in your area of work.

For a company, an internship is a evaluation ground for future permanent hire candidates. The company allows the students to learn about the company, their job, their processes and give the students a hands-on, real time work experience. Often this experience leads to career enrichment and an internship at a good company can lead to a successful final placement at the same company or elsewhere.
